The Brief

The participant needed reliable wheelchair access from the street to the front door. The existing entry had a step, which made independent access impossible and put both the participant and their support people at risk every time they came or went.

The brief was straightforward:

A compliant ramp with the correct gradient and landings
Safe to use in wet weather
Wide enough for comfortable wheelchair access and a support person alongside
Built to last in Geelong’s climate
A finish that suited the home, not something that looked like a hospital fit-out.

The Build

PB Builds designed the ramp to suit the front of the home. The gradient meets accessibility standards, with a landing at the top that gives the participant room to position themselves before entering.

The structure is built to handle daily use for years. Materials were chosen for durability and grip, with a surface that stays safe when it rains. Handrails were installed at the correct height on both sides for support.

We worked the design around the existing front garden so the home still looks like a home. The ramp ties into the entry naturally rather than dominating it.

The result is access the participant can use on their own, every day, without thinking about it.

Why This Matters

For NDIS participants, independent access changes how you live in your own home. You do not have to wait for help to leave the house. You do not have to plan every outing around who is available. You do not have to feel like a visitor in your own front yard.

The ramp is a small part of a larger renovation we delivered at this property, but it is the part that changed the participant’s day-to-day life first. The day it was finished, they could come and go on their own terms.

PB Builds Home Modification

Every NDIS modification we deliver is built to the same standard as our private renovations:

Compliant with relevant access standards
Built to last, with materials suited to the Victorian climate
Designed to suit the home, not impose on it
Project managed end to end so the participant and their family are not left coordinating trades

We handle the full scope including planning, approvals where required, construction, and final inspection.
